Chapter 45 The Maiden of the Bridge, Hashihime
Kaoru, who feels uneasy about his own birth, starts to visit The Eighth Prince, a half brother of Hikaru Genji, who sought refuge in Buddhism, quite often at his mountain retreat in Uji. At one point while The Eight Prince is absent, Kaoru steals a peek at the two daughters of The Eighth Prince playing in concert. He is drawn to the elder daughter, Oigimi, and they begin to exchange letters. Kaoru discovers from an old serving woman at The Eighth Prince's mountain retreat that he is not a true son of Hikaru Genji and is surprised and suffers from a sense of dejection. At one point, Kaoru mentions his experience at Uji to Prince Niou, who becomes interested in the daughters.
Historic site
¡Historic site of Hashihime
Hashihime Jinja Shrine is primarily famous for being a shrine to the Deity of Braking up Relationships but in fact it was originally the protective deity of the bridge enshrining Maiden Seoritsu. It is said to have been enshrined at Uji Bridge San-no-Ma a long time ago.
