| Prince Niou cannot get Ukifune out of his mind and searches for her. Finding that she is sheltered by Kaoru in Uji, he disguises himself as Kaoru and, taking advantage of the darkness, enters her bedroom and forcefully has sexual relations with Ukifune. Although Ukifune is surprised at first, she is gradually drawn to Prince Niou's passion. Realizing this, Kaoru does not abandon her, but instead surrounds her with very tight security, such that Prince Niou cannot approach her. Torn between the calm and faithful Kaoru and the passionate Prince Niou, Ukifune decides to die and secretly leaves the mountain retreat. |

¡Historic site of Ukifune
In the past there was a shrine called Ukifune Yashiro along the Nara Route, which was said to be a protective deity of waterway traffic. After several relocations since then, it was placed in the current location. |
