Chapter 53 At Writing Practice, Tenarai
Ukifune, who was wandering along the Uji River intending to throw herself in the river, is rescued by Yokawa no Sozu and eventually regains her health due to the careful nursing by Imouto no Ama. However, she remains sad that she is alive against her will and weeps every day. When the husband of the dead daughter of Imouto no Ama proposes to her, she turns him down and instead tonsures to become a nun and live out the rest of her life in quiet reclusion. In time, this news reaches the ears of Kaoru, who cannot get Ukifune out of his mind and is sad and depressed.
