The Tale of Genji and Uji
Among the 54 chapters of “The Tale of Genji” by Murasaki Shikibu, the last ten chapters are called the “Ten Uji Chapters” because the main stages are set at various locations in Uji. As seen from the fact that the Ten Uji Chapters begins from “The Maiden of the Bridge” and ends with “The Floating Bridge of Dreams,” it is obvious that the backdrop of the misty Uji River was absolutely crucial to the last chapters of the tale. In the surrounding areas of the Uji River, an age-old scenery that appears as if it has existed beyond the current of time for thousands of years, many historic sites have been built - some of them before recorded history - that invite visitors to the long-gone world of Heian court literature.
